Taxonomy
Angiosperms/Monocotyledoneae/Gramineae/Panicum/Panicum hallii
Overview
Perennial C4 grasses, including switchgrass, miscanthus, big bluestem and others, are currently the most promising system for cellulosic biofuel feedstock production. However, the large (usually polyploid) genomes of these candidate biofuel feedstocks limit the efficacy of investigations into the genes controlling yield, tissue quality and conversion characteristics, ultimately constraining breeding and improvement efforts.
Panicum hallii — a cousin of Switchgrass — has a compact diploid genome, is self compatible and has short generation times, which permit accurate genome annotation and assembly and replicated experimentation in a laboratory setting. P. hallii also shows massive genetic variation in many important traits related to biomass production, including timing of flowering, growth rate, disease susceptibility and drought tolerance. This combination of genomic and physiological attributes makes P. hallii the ideal genetic model for switchgrass and other C4 perennial grasses.
