Overview
A native of North America, the Great Plains, and much of the eastern United States. Panicum virgatum can be used as forage, soil and water conservation and wind barrier plants, as well as as raw materials for biofuels and alternative energy production.
Panicum virgatum is a C4 plant, which requires high growth temperature. The lowest germination temperature was 10.3 °c, the seed Germination was slow when the soil temperature was below 15.5 °C, and the optimum temperature for the growth of switchgrass was about 30 °C. Panicum virgatum has obvious photoperiod characteristics. It is a short-day plant and can flower in short sunshine. Panicum virgatum can adapt to various soil types, such as sandy soil and clay loam soil, and has strong drought tolerance. It can grow well even in rocky soil. The suitable soil Ph value is 4.9 ~ 7.6, and it grows best in neutral condition.
